Apler and his wife offered €30,000 for information that would lead to the apprehension of the accused offender, and the story even made it into a German TV program for unresolved crimes.
However, prosecutors claim that when police started looking into the case, they discovered that Apler had previously looked up how individuals act while they are unconscious online.
According to them, he hurt his head during the mugging by hitting himself with an empty bottle of Prosecco. They have pointed up many inconsistencies in his statement.
The bottle is apparently seen being carried by Apler in the buggy on the footage. Later, beside the riverside, shards of the bottle were discovered close to the site of the murder.
The prosecution claims that in order to make the bogus mugging seem more credible, Apler tossed his phone and wallet aside.
