A massive rescue effort is underway as a boat collides with a ferry carrying up to 50 people, leaving at least one person dead.

A boat struck a ferry off the Memorial Causeway Bridge in Florida, killing one person and injuring several others, according to authorities. The boat then ran away.

According to a tweet from the Clearwater Police Department, the crash was deemed “a mass casualty incident” by the Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department because of the numerous injuries.

Last night (April 27), the ship carrying over 40 passengers was carrying all of the injured. The deceased’s details were not disclosed by the police.

All patients and passengers were evacuated when the boat landed on a sandbar just south of the Memorial Causeway Bridge.

The boat that escaped the scene is reportedly privately owned, although not much is known about it at this time.

The number of injured people was not immediately disclosed by the authorities.
