Following the internet criticism, the director of the Opening Ceremony, Thomas Jolly, denied that the performance symbolized The Last Supper, saying instead that he drew inspiration from the Feast of Dionysus, the Greek deity of wine.
He said, as reported by News.com.au, that his intention is not to be subversive, ridicule, or shock. “Above all else, I wished to convey a message of love and inclusivity, not one that would divide.”
On Sunday, July 28, Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps told reporters that “clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group,” adding her voice to the uproar. Of course, we sincerely apologize if anybody has taken offense.
