On Tuesday afternoon, tourists in the Jammu and Kashmir region were shot at by suspected militants.
Indian police have reported that at least 24 persons were murdered, however local reports indicate that the death toll may have increased to between 26 and 30.
The popular summer hideaway of Pahalgam, which is roughly 55 miles away by car from the important city of Srinagar, was the site of the attack.
Several people were seriously hurt when four gunmen, who top authorities characterized as militants against Indian control, opened fire at close range.
According to Indian media, a gang of people with guns first demanded visitors to present their identity cards when they arrived. They allegedly started shooting shortly later.
