The length of time the woman and her son had been dead is unknown, but for weeks the neighbors complained of a death-like stench.
Officers checked on the family Tuesday at the East 231st Street apartment in the Wakefield section after receiving an anonymous call.
They left, though, because they could not detect the smell or hear any noises coming from the apartment.
Regarding the police, one neighbor remarked, “They said they’d be back in a few days.” “She was attempting to obtain a court order to have the door broken in,” one of the social workers stated.
