She went to Zaporizhzhia to cover Russia’s incarceration and torture of citizens in Ukraine, but she vanished as soon as she arrived.
Until almost nine months later, when Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed she was being held in a prison facility at Taganrog, an infamous center suspected of widespread abuse and harsh conditions.
Her family was unaware of what had transpired. Then, in September, Russia informed her family that she had passed away while being transferred to Moscow, allegedly as part of a prearranged prisoner exchange.
It was too late by then.
In addition to lacking important organs, the journalist’s remains were returned to Ukraine with evidence of what authorities suspect may have been a cover-up.
