According to a study, marijuana use may result in a dementia diagnosis within the next five years.

“Compared to someone who was admitted to the hospital for another reason, someone who has an ER visit or hospitalization because of cannabis had a 23% higher risk of developing dementia within five years.

Dr. Daniel Myran, a Canadian co-author of the study, told CNN that their risk is 72% higher than that of the general population.

“Those numbers have already factored out other reasons for dementia, such as age, sex, mental health or substance use.

And whether or not you have chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease,” the assistant professor of the University of Ottawa’s family medicine department added.

According to earlier studies, people who use marijuana have a 25% higher chance of being admitted to the emergency room than people who don’t.

However, this is not a study that anyone should look at and conclude that “Cannabis use causes dementia,” Myran continued.
