Those between the ages of 45 and 64 had a five-fold increase in cannabis-related hospital visits between 2008 and 2021, while those 65 and older saw a roughly 27-fold increase.
In comparison to those who visited the hospital for any reason, those who had cannabis-related hospital visits had a 1.5-fold higher chance of receiving a dementia diagnosis within five years.
The findings showed that whilst 3.6 percent of patients with general hospital visits acquired dementia, just 1.3 percent of the general population did.
Additionally, five percent of patients with cannabis-related visits had dementia.
Those with cannabis-related hospital visits continued to have a greater risk of dementia even after controlling for factors like age, health, and lifestyle.
In actuality, however, their risk was lower than that of individuals who had alcohol-related hospitalizations.
