According to those informed on versions of the executive order that have been circulating among senior administration officials,
President Donald Trump may soon sign an order instructing the secretary of education to abolish the federal Department of Education. It is anticipated that the planned order abolishing.
The agency would require Congress to enact legislation to abolish the department and that the education secretary submit a proposal for its destruction.
Although it’s still unknown when Trump would sign the order, people with knowledge of the procedure told ABC News that discussions on the department’s future have been going on.
Trump would be one step closer to delivering on his months-long campaign pledge to dismantle the agency and return control of education policy to the states if he were to wind it down.
However, sources told ABC News that any executive action would probably request a plan to close the agency rather than an instant order to do so.
