Megan Garcia, a mother from Florida, is suing Character.AI, claiming that her teenage son’s untimely death was caused by their chatbot.
Garcia claims that her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, was “emotionally involved” with a virtual version of the famous “Game of Thrones” heroine Daenerys Targaryen.
Garcia claims that the teen’s obsession with this chatbot caused him to become vulnerable and alone as he sank into a realm where truth and fantasy blended together.
According to reports, Sewell started a conversation with the Daenerys bot on Character.AI in April 2023. What started out as a pleasant pastime quickly took a troubling turn.
Garcia’s life fell apart on February 28, 2024, when her son committed himself and left his virtual “Dany” with eerie notes.
