El Pais reported that in June 2005, Cosme reportedly saw María and inquired about her kid, asking, “How’s your daughter?”
Cosme was discovered by María, who allegedly proceeded to get gasoline, doused him in the fuel, and then lit him on fire. According to reports, Cosme succumbed to his burns a week down the road.
In July 2009, the mother was given a nine-and-a-half-year term after being convicted guilty of the rapist’s murder.
Given what Cosme had done to her daughter, people were appalled by the mother’s guilt and imprisonment, and they began petitions and filed multiple appeals.
After her lawyer argued that her client had behaved under the influence of temporary insanity, her sentence was reduced to five and a half years in 2010.
Pardon papers were filed in 2011 to postpone her sentencing; but, in 2013, they were denied, according to The Mirror.
