After losing a High Court case over police protection, Meghan Markle may not be able to attend Prince Harry’s Invictus Games in Birmingham. The city, which just experienced its council’s bankruptcy, is hosting the event to celebrate winning a £26 million bid.

 

At Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC), a unique event took place this morning that included a flag-raising ceremony and a wheelchair pickleball demonstration.

As a part of a £300 million budget savings campaign, the city council is increasing council tax by 21% over the next two years after declaring bankruptcy in September. Not the council, but the UK government footed the bill for the £26 million bid to host the games.

Stratford Olympic Park in the nation’s capital was the first of several global venues for the competition, which has since traveled to Orlando,

Toronto, Sydney, The Hague, and Dusseldorf. Vancouver and Whistler will host the first winter hybrid Games in February of next year.
