Calhoun’s 10-month contract at Satellite High School, in Satellite Beach, an hour’s drive southeast of Orlando, came up for review in May.

Since then, more than 18,000 people—including the parents of her former students—have signed a petition.

“Ms. Calhoun, a beloved educator, will no longer be employed by Brevard County. Ms. Calhoun, a devoted teacher and well-respected member of the community.

In which she was raised and now makes significant contributions, is being penalized for simply respecting a student’s decision,” the statement said.

She received criticism for using a student’s preferred name instead of their official one, which was a clear violation of their rights and dignity.

“Ms. Calhoun exemplifies the inclusiveness, empathy, and respect for uniqueness that characterize good education. Her passing would be a huge blow to the education community in Brevard County.
