A distraught nun gained notoriety for breaching rules and going into Pope Francis’s casket’s restricted area.
A French-Argentine nun named Sister Genevieve Jeanningros was observed sobbing near the casket of the late Pope.
The 81-year-old was observed going inside the restricted area, which is typically only accessible by priests, bishops, and cardinals, at St. Peter’s Basilica, the location of the Pope’s funeral.
However, on the first day of the Pope’s lying-in state, the nun was seen using a tissue to wipe away her tears as she walked up to his body in video that has since gone viral.
The nun, who was close to Pope Francis, was devastated to be permitted to stand beside the casket.
When the Pope was Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, they became friends.
