The following day, his family, still in despair, saw the video. His father is now suspected of attacking a deputy in retaliation after becoming so distraught that he was unable to finish watching the video.
Rodney Hinton Jr. is accused of aggravated murder and is being held without bond. He intentionally sped into Deputy Henderson, a well-respected veteran cop with 33 years of service, according to the prosecution.
Officers were clamoring for justice in the courtroom, but for many in the community, the deeper injustice had already happened when another Black family had to bury a child seized by the police and another young Black life was cut short.
The Hinton family was disturbed by the video, according to attorney Michael Wright. Ryan had recently turned eighteen. He was an enjoyable, kind, and decent child.
His family is now dealing with a police shooting that has no conclusive evidence and hazy video. They are inconsolable. Wright said that he is pursuing transparency and submitting requests for public records.
“We cannot ignore the fact that this started with another Black youth being shot down by law enforcement,” he added, adding that “this is a horrific tragedy on both sides.”
The officer who shot Ryan, according to Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge, thought the teen’s gun was aimed at him. However, no video supports that.
