After a high school teacher in Florida used a student’s name other than their legal name without getting consent from the parents, the school system decided not to extend the instructor’s contract.
In an email sent to FLORIDA TODAY, a division of the USA TODAY Network, on Tuesday evening, Brevard Public Schools spokesperson Janet Murnaghan stated that.
The decision was made not to extend the annual contract of Satellite High School teacher Melissa Calhoun following an investigation into the matter.
“At BPS our focus is on education – teachers are here to teach and support students academically,” said Murnaghan.
“Our job is to work in partnership with parents and guardians to ensure student success.” Calhoun was contacted by FLORIDA TODAY, but they did not respond.
According to Murnaghan, Calhoun will complete her contract, which ends in May of this year. The district decided not to extend it since Florida would need.
