Cofer now runs a Facebook support group for Lasik patients and told The Post she personally knows of at least 40 people who died by suicide following the procedure.
FDA and Industry Response
The FDA acknowledges risks on its website, including chronic dry eyes, glare, halos, and even permanent vision loss.
However, the American Refractive Surgery Council maintains that Lasik is “one of the most studied elective surgical procedures available today,” citing a rate of sight-threatening complications “well below one percent.”
Still, critics argue the true cost is being hidden. “People come in with healthy eyes and all they need is eyeglasses,” said Waxler.
