Officers from the East Precinct discovered the Kia Soul burning when they went to a car fire the next day.
The car was taken to an impound facility by two trucks after the fire was put out, and detectives were able to identify its owner.
According to reports, the owner told authorities that her automobile had been stolen. Tolliver added, “She claimed it had been stolen approximately five or six days prior, but she never reported it as stolen.”
Police discovered Ashely’s most recent call to a person saved on the phone as “Jaco” as the investigation went on. Video showed the Kia appeared to be driven by a Mercedes on the day of the shooting.
The Mercedes owner, who was tracked down by investigators using a license plate reader, allegedly informed authorities that he had spent the day with McGregor and that he had confessed to shooting the victims.
Tolliver testified that on July 13, McGregor deleted the majority of his text messages from his phone.
