Thomas Mechin, a friend of Palmier’s, told investigators that he had asked his “childhood friend” to visit him at his new house in Thailand for a fantasy vacation.
According to him, “Bastien wanted to go further into the prohibited zone that was near the cliff edge” after they had reached the top of the waterfall.
Thomas told police that he “crossed the rope that was closing off the area” and that he “warned him to stay away but he didn’t listen.”

The rescuers were eventually able to get the corpse out of the waterfall after three hours, but police noted that the slick rocks made the process more challenging.
