Scientists warn that a large volcano that has been hit by around 73 earthquakes in the last week may soon explode.
According to information released by the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) on Friday, Mount Spurr is still experiencing high levels of instability and might erupt violently.
AVO said that “much smaller quakes are occurring several times per hour” in addition to the 73 registered earthquakes.
Magma rising toward the surface causes pressure and fissures in the surrounding rock, which in turn causes the seismic activity.
Additionally, the agency has seen increasing gas emissions and steam emerging from the volcano. AVO said that any eruption would probably be similar to those that occurred in 1992 and 1953.
