As disturbing film causes uproar, a streamer allows Chinese water torturers to solicit funds.

 

Social media has been used by dozens of users to criticize the unsettling video and the streamer’s actions. On Twitter, someone said, “Chinese torture methods for fame and money are CRAZY.”

Others said it brought to mind the opening scene of the new Black Mirror series, “Common People,” in which a guy in dire need of cash to cover his wife’s medical expenses resorts.

To a website called DumDummies to broadcast degrading antics in real time in return for cash. Since he must depend on the stunt to save his wife’s life, the stunts become more outrageous.

“I just finished that episode 20 minutes ago and this reminded [me] of it too!” another person said. “Streamers are using Black Mirror for ideas,” a third person said.

Numerous additional people said that they thought the action was a “sad” representation of our technologically advanced society.
