According to Jeff Metcalf, Austin was a gifted athlete, an honor student, and a born leader. He played football for Memorial High School as a linebacker in addition to track and field.
“Austin had leadership skills. The football team was led by him. He claimed that his coaches and players had chosen him as the team’s MVP.
“He engaged in indoor play. Outside, his sibling plays. He took great satisfaction in playing football. He was trying to get faster in track and field.
