DNA and New Technology: A Case Breakthrough
Let’s fast-forward to 2019. With fresh resolve and strong new forensic tools, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office restarted the case.
They collaborated with Othram, a state-of-the-art forensic DNA laboratory that focuses on cold cases. Othram created a thorough DNA profile from the found remains using forensic-grade genome sequencing.
They had a match by 2022.
“This case serves as a reminder of how science and teamwork can provide long-overdue answers,” Othram’s Kristen Cunnane remarked.
Finding Laura’s Family in New York Through Genealogy
Using the DNA profile, investigators were able to identify distant relatives. With patience, they used genetic genealogy to piece together Laura’s family tree.
