Before labeling the trial a “misunderstanding,” the 69-year-old Bigamist explains why he married his 16-year-old stepdaughter and had children with her.

“He admitted the offence and claimed he had married to allow [his step-daughter] to be entitled to additional government benefits,”

Mr. Kingsford said, referring to a police interview conducted after his detention. He verified that he had done this by changing his name via a deed poll.

“He informed the police that [his wife] attended the wedding ceremony, that the relationship was consensual, and that [the step-daughter] was 16 when he married her.”

In his police interrogation, Ingram also acknowledged that his legal wife was unaware that he was her daughter’s biological father.
