Responding to the news during a White House press briefing on Tuesday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent framed the action as a victory for the trade strategy of the government.
“I believe that eventually the Chinese tariffs will prove unsustainable for China,” Bessent remarked.
“Based on some really high figures over the past several days, Chinese could lose 10 million jobs very rapidly should these numbers remain on. And even if the tariffs decrease might result in lost five million jobs.
