The teens, wearing sweatshirts and shorts — and no life jackets — were quickly swept 14 nautical miles offshore, clinging to a single inflatable paddleboard.
“It was low tide, the water looked pretty nice, and we decided it was a great time to go to the sandbar,” Avery told Inside Edition.
“The current was very strong,” Eva added. “Within minutes, we were gone.”
As night fell, the situation turned critical. Six-foot waves, gusting winds, and near-freezing water temperatures made survival nearly impossible.
“One hundred percent our lives were in danger,” Avery said. “We had trouble keeping our hearts beating… Our breathing had synced up — it was very slow.”
