To keep themselves alert and emotionally grounded, the girls sang Disney songs, cracked jokes, and played the alphabet game naming animals — anything to keep panic at bay.
“We had to keep laughing, or we were going to lose it,” Avery said at a press conference ten days after their rescue.
Throughout the night, the girls saw helicopters flying overhead but were unable to catch attention — even after four passes.
“We were yelling and waving the paddle, trying everything,” Eva said. But the darkness and waves worked against them.
