British Mum Claims Son Was ‘Set Up’ After Cocaine Found in Passport at Thai Airport

Swain finally returned to the UK in early August, bringing an end to a months-long ordeal that his family fears could have ruined his life.

Thailand’s Narcotics Act imposes severe penalties for drug offenses. Importing cocaine carries a maximum sentence of 20 years to life and fines up to 5 million baht (about £108,000).

Possession alone can result in up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 100,000 baht (around £2,000).

Michelle Swain says her son’s case should serve as a warning to others traveling abroad, especially young people.

“It was meant to be a nice holiday. Instead, it turned into a nightmare,” she said. “Everyone says, ‘Do the crime, do the time,’ but you can’t understand until it happens to you. This could happen to any young tourist.”

She added that while Thailand remains a “beautiful” and “friendly” country, travelers must stay vigilant — because if something goes wrong, “there’s nothing you can do about it.”
