ATLANTA — WNBA star Brittney Griner is facing widespread criticism following an on-court altercation and a controversial sideline comment during a Thursday night game between the Atlanta Dream and the Indiana Fever.
The incident unfolded late in the fourth quarter when Griner fouled Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark, allegedly striking her in the face with an elbow during a contested play.
The personal foul—Griner’s fifth—resulted in her disqualification from the remainder of the game.
After being benched, Griner appeared to make a comment from the sideline that has since ignited a firestorm on social media.

Though no official audio has been released, numerous online users claim the Phoenix Mercury center used the phrase, “trash f—ing White girl,” in reference to Clark.
Caitlin Clark, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year and a former University of Iowa standout, has not publicly commented on the altercation. The Indiana Fever organization has also remained silent.
