Bronze Statue Honoring John Lewis Replaces Confederate Obelisk

A new statue of John Lewis has replaced a Confederate monument. Lewis dedicated his life to combating bigotry, and he continues to do so even after death.

The late congressman, Lewis, was honored at Decatur Square in the suburbs of Atlanta. Lewis served in Congress for almost 30 years until passing away in 2020.

Local authorities placed the 12-foot-tall monument of JL at a significant spot, formally replacing an obelisk honoring the Confederacy that was built in 1908.

On Saturday morning, the statue was unveiled. John was a key player in the Civil Rights movement, participating in demonstrations with leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King
