Since 2020, when nationwide Black Lives Matter demonstrations spread and many antiquated monuments were demolished, the obelisk has not truly rested on the plinth that John occupied.

Even President Obama, who was in office at the time, awarded Lewis the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011,

stating that Lewis will always be associated with bravery in the United States of America. Evidently, his influence continues to have a significant effect on civil rights.
