🇲🇽 Mexico Responds: “We Are Deeply Saddened”

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum offered condolences, stating she was “deeply saddened by the loss of two crew members.”

The Mexican Navy released a statement confirming the ship suffered mechanical failure during a maneuver and will suspend its 2024 international training voyage.

The Cuauhtémoc, launched in 1982, had arrived in NYC just days earlier as part of the Sail4th 2026 promotion — a celebration of America’s 250th birthday. Before the crash, the ship had been open to public tours at Pier 17.

The Cuauhtémoc was originally bound for Iceland, part of a 22-port, 15-country tour. Now, the voyage is on hold.
