A runner has tragically died after collapsing during the Brooklyn Half Marathon on Saturday. Charles Rogers, a 31-year-old Manhattan resident.
Suffered cardiac arrest around mile 8 of the 13.1-mile course, according to police and race officials.
Rogers collapsed at approximately 8:11 a.m. near Ocean Parkway and 18th Avenue, according to the New York Post.
Emergency responders quickly performed CPR and transported him to Maimonides Medical Center, but he was later pronounced dead.
“It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we confirm the passing of one of today’s race participants,” said Crystal Howard, Chief Communications and Community Coordinator for New York Road Runners (NYRR).
“On behalf of the whole running community, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.”
This was Rogers’ first time participating in the Brooklyn Half, PEOPLE reports. In a statement, NYRR emphasized that runner safety remains a top priority.
