This afternoon, pro-trans demonstrators battled with police and other members of the public, resulting in two arrests and mayhem on Melbourne’s streets.
After the demonstrations, which involved an estimated 440 protestors, four police officers were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
On Saturday morning, Women’s Voices Australia organized a separate event on the steps of Parliament House, where pro-trans counter-protesters came to yell loudly and play drums.
The women’s rights organization was there to protest the proposed extension of anti-vilification regulations by the Allan government, which they said violated free speech.
Before long, the counter-protesters outnumbered them. Authorities set up a search area close to the gathering and stationed riot police outside parliament in anticipation of the incident.
