In an attempt to stabilize her, she was sent urgently to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital’s critical care unit in Eldoret, Kenya.
Regretfully, Cheptegei passed away from her wounds, and acting hospital director Dr. Owen Menach verified her passing on Thursday, September 5.
The athletics federation of Uganda posted a devastating tribute on platform X, stating, “We are deeply
saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence.”
As a federation, we demand justice and denounce such behavior. They said, “May her soul rest in peace.
Only a few weeks had passed since Cheptegei finished 44th in the marathon at the Paris Games before the horrifying occurrence.
