Doctors are concerned about the dramatic increase in 14 other malignancies among young individuals, with colon cancer being only the beginning.

Additionally, 2,099 young individuals get a colon cancer diagnosis, 1,793 receive a kidney cancer diagnosis, and 1,209 receive a uterine cancer diagnosis.

Even while the figures may not seem like much, they represent a significant rise given that 43,000 women under 50 had a breast cancer diagnosis in 2010. There are currently no known causes for the increase in cancer cases among young individuals.

“One of the main theories is rising obesity rates because a number of these cancer types are known to be linked to excess body weight,” Dr. Shiels said.

One potential reason for breast cancer is the tendency for women to have their first child later in life. Breastfeeding and pregnancy are known to lower the risk.

Federal organizations the Institute of Cancer Research and the National Institutes of Health’s Intramural Research Program of the National Cancer Institute provided funding for the research.
