Nash, then 62, underwent an extensive face transplant in 2011 after surviving a savage attack by a chimpanzee. However, she was hospitalized again five years later when her body began to reject the transplant.
The brutal mauling occurred in February 2009 in Stamford, Connecticut, when Nash was attacked by her employer’s pet chimpanzee, a 200-pound animal named Travis.
The chimp had previously appeared in national advertisements for brands like Old Navy and Coca-Cola and was widely believed to be tame—engaging in seemingly human behaviors.
