In an interview with President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, criticized NBC News for “selectively omitting” a crucial portion of the 14th Amendment.
The omission happened during Trump’s discussion of his proposal to abolish birthright citizenship, a significant issue he plans to implement once in office.
Trump discussed a number of his administration’s proposed measures with Kristen Welker of NBC on Meet the Press.
Among them was his plan to abolish birthright citizenship, which at the moment confers citizenship on anybody born in the US, irrespective of the citizenship status of their parents.
“It’s ridiculous, and it has to end,” Trump said in response to a question about the policy, indicating his desire to take quick action.
Ending birthright citizenship will be a top goal “on Day One” of his administration, he said. Welker objected, arguing that “all persons born in the United States are citizens”
