“What’s going on?” the judge said sternly.
A carefully approaching cop examined Michael’s jacket. A recording gadget dropped to the ground, tiny and metallic. The prosecutor swiftly objected, “This proves nothing!” and his face went white.
“Play it,” the judge ordered the cop, ignoring him.
Static crackled from the little recorder, and a nervous quiet fell over the room. Then a stern voice could be heard clearly: “Just plant the evidence.”
Carter is the ideal scapegoat because of his spotless record. Do it. Michael’s heart was racing. That voice was that of his own boss, mentor, and alleged ally, Captain Ray Harding.
The prosecution yelled, “Enough!” but the judge firmly stepped in, ordering Captain Harding to be brought in for interrogation and Michael to return to holding.
