Bindi and Robert showed the same enthusiasm as their father. I began working at a very young age.
Unfortunately, things began to go wrong in 2006.
Steve was shooting in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef for the documentary series Ocean’s De*dliest on September 4th when a stray stingray barb stabbed him in the chest while he was snorkeling.
The deadly nature of the sting became immediately apparent. The environmentalist passed out quickly when the stingray’s barb reached his heart, even though Steve believed it had just punctured his lung.
Unfortunately, he passed away from his injuries. The damage to his heart was so great that we probably wouldn’t have been able to rescue him.
Even if we had managed to bring him into an emergency hospital at that time. As we drive back, I’m shouting to one of the other crew members to place their hand over the wound as we’re telling him things like, “Think of your kids, Steve, hang on, hang on.”
