Before going pro, the brothers were both hockey players at Boston College. Johnny had his 11-year NHL career playing with
the Calgary Flames and then the Blue Jackets, while Matthew played for the Worcester Railers of the East Coast Hockey League in 2022.
Just hours before to the tragic event, the Gaudreau brothers were present at a family wedding rehearsal where
they were scheduled to serve as groomsmen for their sister Katie Gaudreau, who was getting ready to wed hockey player Devin Joyce in Gloucester City, New Jersey.
The event was postponed from its scheduled date of August 30 to the next day.
