Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb, prosecutes DUI charges, while the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia handles the prosecution of other felonies in Washington.
Given that Ed Martin, the District of Columbia’s acting U.S. attorney, is a conservative activist with connections to Republicans on Capitol Hill, the difference may have significance.
Martin was given access to Capitol Police footage from the brawl at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, which he used to disseminate conspiracy theories about the incident.
Trump wants Martin to be the city’s permanent lead federal prosecutor. A request for comment was not immediately answered by Schwalb’s office.
Martin’s office did not approve the arrest warrant that Washington police submitted for Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., last month.
Mills said that police had assisted in “resolving a private matter.” Mills had been the subject of an investigation about claims of an attack in an apartment complex.
