Following the death of a veteran Chicago fire captain in a garage fire, authorities have placed a person of interest under arrest.

Injuries sustained while battling a fire at 1239 N. Pine Ave. claimed the life of 54-year-old Capt. David Meyer.

When the collapse happened, firefighters were starting salvage and overhaul efforts after putting out the fire, according to Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt.

After being transported to Stroger Hospital, Meyer was declared deceased.

A Mayday call for a Chicago firefighter was placed.

What we know: CFD personnel encircled Meyer’s family when they arrived at the hospital following the mayday call that was issued following the collapse.

According to officials, family members and other firefighters were clearly upset. Meyer was most recently assigned to Truck 29 after joining the department in 1996.
