Serving the West Side of Chicago for the majority of his career, he was regarded as a valued member of his family and a consistent presence in the department.
His parents, three children, a son, and his wife all survive him. According to his wife, the couple had been together since they were fifteen years old.
“We go to work every day and we never know if we’re going to come home, but this is what we love to do, and he was really good at it,” said Nance-Holt.
Mayor Brandon Johnson commended Meyer’s commitment as a public servant and that he prayed with his family.
“Let this serve as a continual reminder of how brittle and short life can be. Let’s not assume anything about one another.
In my capacity as mayor of the City of Chicago, I will keep urging everyone to unite during this period of loss and sorrow, but I have faith that with prayer and encouragement, we will overcome it,” Johnson stated.
