According to Randy Schmitz, a captain with the Calgary Fire Department and head of the Alberta Vehicle Extrication Association, EVs such as Teslas have electronic doors that need electricity to open.
He stated that if a car is involved in an accident and power is lost, the doors would be ‘inoperable using the conventional buttons’.
While it is unknown what caused the accident, the intensity of the fire is thought to be related to the car’s battery.
According to the CBC, Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop stated: “Certainly the intensity of the fire is directly linked to the battery cells in the Tesla.”
The deadly incident occurred after Tesla boasted that its vehicles are the’safest in the world’.Four individuals were killed when the Tesla car they were in crashed and exploded into flames.
