Gabby Logan cut off broadcast of the Great North Run to make a heartbreaking BBC announcement.

“The loss of Claire has crushed us beyond belief. In order to enable us to mourn in peace, we would ask that people respect our privacy in the days to come,” the message said.

As she broke the news, Logan remarked, “You may have recognised Claire Lomas in her bionic suit, which she wore to complete the Great North Run, having been paralysed in her sport, eventing.”

“Well, I regret to inform you that Claire passed away in an accident in Jordan a few days ago,” the statement said, praising Claire as a “wonderful inspiration.”

After the horseback riding accident all those years ago, the former chiropractor from Eye Kettleby near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire was told she would never walk again.

Nevertheless, she used a bionic suit to finish the London Marathon in 2012. In the process, she raised £220,000 in only 17 days.
