Harris presents strategies to address the expense of child care, food, housing, and medication in the speech

In her proposal, the vice president proposed raising the child tax credit and providing “$6,000 in tax relief to families during a child’s first year of life. ” She said that she would want to see

the administration’s Medicare medication price negotiating program expanded as well as the $35 monthly insulin out-of-pocket limit extended to all beneficiaries of Medicare.

Republicans in Congress have opposed both of those measures. Earlier last month, Senate Republicans defeated a far smaller child tax credit measure than the one Harris is proposing.

They also eliminated a provision that would have capped insulin pricing on the private market in 2022. Harris also criticized Trump’s plan to levy universal taxes on goods that are imported.

She said, “He wants to impose what will devastate Americans—what is essentially a national sales tax on everyday products and basic necessities that we import from other countries.

” It will result in increased costs for almost all of your everyday necessities. A Trump-era gas tax. A Trump tax on food. A Trump tax on apparel.
