With over 360 mammal species, including tapirs and elephants, residing in its tropical jungles, Malaysia is one of the most animal-rich and biodiverse nations on earth.
Elephants’ emotional traits are comparable to those of humans, according to research. Earlier this year, Indian scientists discovered that elephants engage in human-like funeral rituals.
In 2022 and 2023, five calf burials were found by researchers in the Bengal region of the country. In each instance, the herd had buried the dead calf with its legs facing up after carrying it by its trunk and legs.
On tea estates, hundreds of meters from the closest populated areas, the calves were interred in irrigation canals.
The calves, who were between three months and a year old, had perished from multiple organ failure, according to post-mortem examinations.
