Benjamin Aviles Jr., 61, passed away unexpectedly on March 21 due to heart issues, leaving his grieving family in shock and unable to process the Puerto Rican’s loss.
When the pallbearers were laying him to rest at Greenmount Cemetery in North Philadelphia, a week after his funeral (March 28), the burial site they were standing on collapsed onto Aviles’ final resting place.
Maribelle Rodriguez, his stepdaughter, told ABC7: “It was just a horrible incident that happened at a bad moment.”
While the men who fell into the pit sustained injuries to their hands, legs, and backs, Benjamin, the son of Aviles, was struck in the head while his father’s coffin was resting on him.
