Idaho Police Body Cam Captures Officers Shooting Teen with Autism

Victor’s family explained that he had cerebral palsy, autism, and was nonverbal. Authorities say the officers were unaware of these medical conditions at the time.

Police had responded to a call reporting a person allegedly acting erratically and carrying a knife.

Though Perez did have a blade, his family clarified that he was not under the influence, but rather experiencing a distress episode related to his condition.

Reports indicate the teen sustained multiple injuries, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and required a leg amputation.

Roughly a week after the April 5 incident, Victor was declared clinically brain dead and was removed from life support. He later passed away.

In the released footage, there appears to be no attempt by police to calm the situation or understand the underlying issues affecting the teen.

The incident has sparked public demonstrations, candlelight vigils, and widespread concern in the Pocatello community. The case is currently under investigation by the East Idaho Critical Incident Task Force.
